Word Frequency
Analyze word frequency in text. Runs on your device — nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored.
No words to display. Enter some text on the left.
Paste any English text and this tool counts how often each word appears, then ranks the words from most to least frequent. The results table shows the rank, the word, the count and its share of all words, with a small bar next to each word so the leaders stand out. A summary card gives the total word count, the number of unique words and the most common word.
Three options shape the count. Case-insensitive merges "The" and "the" into one entry, Remove stop words skips a built-in list of 77 very common English words (the, and, is, you and so on), and Minimum word length ignores words shorter than the number you set (the default is 2). The table shows the top 10 words; press the button below it to see all of them, and export the full list as a CSV file with the columns Rank, Word, Count and Percent.
Why this runs on your device
Counting is plain JavaScript running on the text in the box, and nothing is sent anywhere, so it is safe for a draft, an essay or a transcript you would rather not paste into a web service. There is no account and no size limit beyond what your browser can handle.
- Paste or type your text into the input box.
- Choose whether to ignore case, remove stop words and set a minimum word length.
- Read the ranked table and the summary card, and press the button to show every word.
- Export the list as a CSV file if you want to use it in a spreadsheet.
- Only words made of the letters A to Z (plus apostrophes) are counted. Accented letters, Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese and other scripts are not recognised: a word like "café" is split at the é, and a text written in another alphabet shows no results at all.
- Numbers are ignored, and a hyphenated word such as "well-known" is counted as two words, "well" and "known".
- The stop-word list is fixed and English only. You can switch it on or off but not edit it. Different forms of a word ("run", "runs", "running") are counted separately because the tool does no stemming.
- The percentage is each word's count divided by the total number of words in the text, including the ones you filtered out. With stop words removed, the percentages in the table therefore add up to less than 100%.
