About ASCII Art Generator

This ASCII art generator turns a photo or PNG into text made of characters. Drop in an image, pick how many characters wide the result should be, and the tool replaces every pixel block with a character whose density matches its brightness — dense symbols for dark areas, spaces for light ones. You can copy the result as plain text, download it as a .txt file, or export it as a PNG.

The controls are deliberately few. Width runs from 20 to 300 characters; the character set can be Standard (@%#*+=-:. ), Detailed (a 70-character ramp for smoother gradients), Blocks (█▓▒░) or Binary (1 and 0); Invert flips light and dark, which is what you want for light text on a dark background; and Colored tints each character with the colour of the pixel it came from. Once you have generated a result, changing any setting regenerates it automatically.

It works on PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files up to 15 MB. This is an image-to-ASCII converter only: there is no mode that renders typed text in ASCII fonts.

Why this runs on your device

Honestly, the privacy stake here is small — a picture turned into punctuation is rarely sensitive. The real benefit is speed: the conversion is a few lines of canvas maths, so there is no upload, no queue and no account, and the result updates as you drag the width slider.

How to use ASCII Art Generator
  1. Drop an image onto the tool or click to choose one (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP, up to 15 MB).
  2. Set the width and choose a character set; tick Invert for light-on-dark or Colored to keep the image's colours.
  3. Press Generate — after that the result refreshes automatically whenever you change a setting.
  4. Copy the text, download it as .txt, or export a PNG.
Limitations and trade-offs
  • Image input only. There is no text-to-ASCII or banner-font mode, so you cannot type a word and get a large lettered result.
  • Colour exists only in the on-screen preview and the PNG export. Copied text and the .txt download are plain characters with no colour information.
  • The PNG export is a fixed small size — roughly 6 pixels per character across and 10 down — so a 100-column result gives a PNG only about 600 pixels wide. Use the .txt file if you need to print or scale it yourself.
  • Animated GIFs are converted from a single frame only; the output is never animated. Fully transparent pixels are treated as empty space unless Invert is on.
